The Challenge
Because of the critical nature of IDS Management’s data, a solution was needed that was absolutely reliable in terms of fast, dependable restore. In addition, IDS’s previous enterprise solution for backup and restore unfortunately came with a licensing structure that was complicated, clumsy, and made it especially expensive. Becoming tired of this, IDS decided it needed an enterprise solution that had a realistic cost, together with a pricing structure that made sense. Bacula Systems was recommended to IDS by a colleague from a previous company.
“We looked at Bacula Enterprise to see ‘does it look simple?’ ‘Does it look overly complex?’. We evaluated it carefully, and we were really impressed. It did exactly what we needed, its configuration was easy, and the pricing structure made complete sense”, said Rich LeBel, Director, Systems & Infrastructure at IDS Management.
The Solution
“We were able to deploy in just two weeks. We started with a small test environment, then took another few days to put it in our corporate staging environment, then a week to put it in the production data center”.
“We chose Bacula Enterprise because of its simple configuration. It has a concise, clear pricing structure that made sense. The product is highly stable, and there are no hidden surprises. It works really well” said Rich.
Now, Bacula Enterprise is used for two data centers at IDS: one of which is used as a corporate development and staging environment. The second is the production environment. “We have around five Hypervisors with forty virtual machines. Bacula controls the backup environment for both environments. Both datacenters have high uptime requirements, but most of all, having extremely fast restoration times is critically important for us” said Rich. “We’ve had about five billion dollars of transactions go through our production environment. Although the amount of actual data is relatively small, the criticality of the actual data being backed up is extremely high” said Rich.
The Results

Rich added:“We don’t need to touch it or worry about it; for example I don’t have to spend significant time reading the job reports in the morning, because the backup jobs are always successful. The restorations are really quick. What more could I want?”
